Why Is There Mold in My Attic?

Posted by at 3:00 PM

People are used to finding mold in their bathrooms, basement, and even in their walls. But what about the attic? Mold removal for your attic might be necessary, especially if you haven't been up there for a while. Take a look at some of the main reasons mold ends up in your attic.

Ventilation System

Your attic should have a ventilation system set up to remove the moisture that settles in your home as well as up in your attic. But if the ventilation system is clogged or somehow breaks, it will create a breeding ground for mold. Mold spores love moist and dark places to grow. This is especially true of areas that aren't used often. If you see mold in one area of your house, you should also check your attic just in case.

Open to Outside Elements

Unlike the rest of your house, rainwater and other weather-related activity can infiltrate your attic quite easily, which is why an attic can often feel musty or humid. Mold spores by themselves are not a problem, but when they come into contact with a lot of humidity, they travel fast. Before you know it, a moist attic could be filled with toxic mold.

Dark Spaces

Sometimes mold can be hard to spot. Along with damp areas, mold breeds well in dark places. That's why basements are often breeding grounds for mold. But you'll also find it in the dark corners of your attic and other places that don't get much sunlight. Because it breeds in dark spots, there will probably be some that you can't find yourself. And the danger of leaving any mold behind is that it will continue to spread. Hiring a restoration company to do a walk-through of your home and for mold removal will actually help you spot it in the darkest places, including your attic.

Not Checked Often

Lastly, we don't think about our attic very often as homeowners. Used as extra space for our decorations, our memories, and other things we don't use often, we don't venture into the space very often. If we wait until we find mold elsewhere, it's probably spread a lot in the attic. A quarterly check of your attic could actually help you be proactive about mold growth in your home.
